The Challenge

One in two fatal accidents in construction is linked to machinery–pedestrian interactions.

The problem isn’t a lack of rules, it’s habit: when you work alongside machines day after day, you stop seeing the danger.

How do you raise awareness of the risks without putting anyone in danger, while speaking the language of the jobsite to thousands of employees?

The Solution

With Uptale, VINCI Construction created 19 modules in 360°, spread across 3 workshops: working around a machine, organizing the jobsite, and guiding and unloading trucks.

The scenarios were written by the HSE teams and played by Vinci’s own staff.

The group watches the same scene from the machine operator’s position, then the pedestrian’s, in order to spark debate among colleagues rather than deliver a top-down message from the manager.

The Deployment

The modules were created in just 4 months. To roll them out across the 250 Business Units (around 30,000 employees), 1,600 facilitators mobilized during the Safety Days.

Trained in advance and equipped with a facilitation guide, they led the workshops, with the Uptale Player and SSO deployed on more than 1,000 workstations.

Uptale did a fantastic job: it was fully scripted, we were very well supported, and we had really great step-by-step guidance.

[…] And then, as I said, co-creating with the people who speak to the reality of the jobsite.
