Metro-North Railroad - VR Training for Blue Signal Protection
Overview
Metro-North Railroad, part of New York's MTA network, runs a large in-house training operation across safety, transportation, and maintenance, delivering roughly 469,000 training hours a year to about 6,800 employees.
The operations training department runs its own production team for video and
e-learning, and learned to shoot and build 360° VR withUptalesupport.
So when they needed a better way to train Maintenance of Equipment employees on
Blue Signal Protection, they built it themselves.
Challenges
Blue Signal Protection keeps employees safe while they work on, under, or between rail equipment. When the signal is set, the equipment must not be moved.
Metro-North was seeing repeated near misses tied to shortcuts in applying Blue Signal, and the existing training fell short: classroom PowerPoint, then hands-on practice out in the field.
Field practice was also slow. A class of 10 needed an extra 5 to 7 hours, each trainee practicing one at a time under instructor observation.
Solution
Working with their own subject matter experts, in-house actors, and a script they wrote themselves, the team built a VR course in two parts.
Part one puts you in the shoes of a new employee inspecting a train, where you see what happens when shortcuts are taken. A "scared straight" moment makes the consequences land.
Part two lets you set up Blue Signal properly, answering questions and following each step as it should be done. Every employee gets the same practice, and mistakes become learning instead of injuries.
