A railroad that can't afford a single shortcut
Metro-North runs 19,000 trains a month across 787 miles of track, serves 270,000 riders per month, and relies on 6,800 employees to keep it all moving. To support them, its training team delivered 469,540 hours of training in 2025 alone.
One procedure in particular raises the stakes: Blue Signal Protection (BSP), which shields maintenance crews while equipment is serviced.
Because the consequences of skipping a step can be fatal, the team had been working to close the gap left by occasional shortcuts, and to do it without ever putting a worker at risk on a live track.
