Context & Challenges

Bouygues Bâtiment France South-East operates in a high-stakes human and operational environment, with:

  • 450 active construction sites

  • 8,000 employees, including 2,400 skilled workers

  • 800 new employees onboarded every year

  • Numerous temporary workers and subcontractors, sometimes facing language barriers

Rethinking traditional approaches

Despite existing safety initiatives (daily safety briefings, signage, on-site awareness actions), Bouygues faced several limitations:

  • Difficulty capturing attention

  • Low retention of key messages

  • Messages sometimes disconnected from on-site reality

  • Recurring deviations from life-saving rules

  • A need to train quickly, everywhere, and consistently

Choosing immersive learning

Virtual reality quickly emerged as an obvious solution:

  • Training that is 5 times more engaging
  • Message retention estimated between 70% and 90%
  • The ability to experience risks without being exposed to them

Thanks to Uptale, employees are immersed in real situations filmed on their own sites, where they must identify hazards, make decisions, and understand the consequences.

Solution implemented with Uptale

Bouygues Bâtiment relied on the Uptale platform to create immersive safety training experiences based on:

  • 360° videos filmed in real construction site conditions

  • Interactive risk-detection scenarios

  • Quizzes, branching learning paths, and contextualized feedback

  • A gamified experience built around a virtual assistant (“Prévi’IA”)

  • Multi-device deployment: VR headsets, computers, screens

  • Offline functionality

  • One-click translation (up to 40–50 languages)

After a first experience co-designed with Uptale, Bouygues teams gained autonomy and went on to create several additional modules themselves.

Deployment

The program was rolled out at scale in the country and during Safety Week 2025.

  • 1,724 sessions completed in one week

  • Nearly 500 on-site facilitators mobilized

  • 15% of training sessions completed using VR headsets

  • The remainder accessed on PCs, tablets, or smartphones

Results

✔ Strong engagement from on-site teams

✔ Better ownership of life-saving rules

✔ Training perceived as more engaging and distinctive

✔ Greater consistency in safety rules across sites

Ambitions

Bouygues aims to go further by:

  • Adapting modules to each profession

  • Training managers in safety leadership

  • Integrating VR from the onboarding phase

  • Autonomously building future modules

Testimony

« With Uptale, we found a solution that is easy to deploy, even on construction sites: offline, multilingual, and accessible across multiple devices. This allows us to train as many people as possible, everywhere, with a consistent and far more engaging message. »

Maximilien Jaeger, Head of Health & Safety Prevention and Operational Excellence
